I don’t think being a Rhodes Scholar (University of Oxford) has anything to do with Rhodes. Rather it’s named after some dude with a surname of Rhodes. Anyway, you can think it comes from Rhodes, Greece, if you want.
We landed in Rhodes this morning and for the first time so far on this trip, did not have anything planned. It was so nice to just sleep in and get up and have coffee and breakfast in our rooms at our own pace.
Judy and I took a walk along the harbour to the Colossus of Rhodes (one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world). Darlene wandered into the old town to have a look around. Sue took it easy on the ship after yesterday’s excursion.
We walked along the harbour. Here’s a nice little statue.

This is from the ship looking over the smaller harbour.
And this is 3 rather old-fashioned windmills. Apparently they used to grind grain brought in from vessels and also corn or grain going out. There were more of them at one time.
And this is what is left of the Colossus of Rhodes. It used to be a huge statue of the Greek sun god Helios. Taller than any at the time. It was destroyed in an earthquake and has never been rebuilt, although there is a buzz that it might be rebuilt again soon! So this area plus the “deer monuments” at the end of the harbour make up the area where the Colossus once stood.
Here are a couple of tourists in the area.
Such a beautiful harbour and town here. Of course, it’s an old walled city, and the wall is standing perfectly all around the old town. Some of it is in this photo.
And here we are in the old town - full of shops for tourists, of course.
After we were done roaming around the town, we came back to the ship and all of us headed to the pool decks to enjoy relaxing there, and grab a bite to eat…and drink. Our one waiter called us the Dirty Banana ladies (that’s what we were drinking). They were quite good. I have to say, the wait staff on the ship are wonderful. They remember us.
Well, off to dinner very shortly. Thanks for reading!
After being on the water for a few days, it’s nice being on Rhodes. 😂 Continue to enjoy the birthday party! ❤️
